GB Dragon Bloodstone Round Beaded Bracelet 8mm
Mineral Information:
A popular cryptocrystalline silicate chalcedony(translucent) or jasper(opaque) variety that is dark green(& sometimes, blue/yellow) & splotchy red inclusions of hematite iron oxide or red jasper, that sometimes also contains quartz. Historically important, it was often considered the most beautiful variety of jasper. There's a host of legends & superstitions about this stone, ranging from the Pliny the Elder (a 1st century sage) saying that it's a stone of invisibility, to India using it as a stone of healing & prevent blood loss when combined & water, which may have a rational basis since iron oxide is a powerful preventative. Perhaps the most famous legend correlates the crucifixion of Jesus, or the stabbing of him & the Spear of Destiny, to this stone - when his sacred blood hit the earth, the rocks became Bloodstone. Bloodstone's older name, Heliotrope, comes from the Greek words 'Helio' (sun) & 'Tropos' (to turn), & is a supposed reference to the mineral bearing a resemblance to the famed Heliotrope flower. As a chalcedony, it's fairly tough & well-suited for ornamental pursuits, ranging from gemstone carvings to jewelry.
