The process of agatization occurs when minerals such as silica gradually replace the original organic material of the coral over millions of years, resulting in a stone that has preserved the original structure and patterns of the coral, but with the hardness and durability of agate.
Agatized Coral has a Mohs Hardness of 6.5-7.
