Mineral Information:
Agate is a variety of gemstone on the chalcedony side of the greater quartz family, a type of microcrystalline quartz, where the crystal makeup is not visible to the human eye - though they can contain quartz and druzy, as well. They are generally described as translucent with significant banding in the form of stripes and splotchy, mosslike formations. Common and popular, the great variety in forms and color variance ensure that no one two pieces will ever look exactly alike. Usage of agate as an ornamental stone goes back at least 2400 years, and quite possibly longer ago then that.
Mineral Care:
Agates are generally safe to handle. Consumption and being used in gem waters, especially in the case of rough specimens, is not advised.
Agates vary in their fragility depending on their composition and structure. Generally, agates are considered to be relatively durable and hard, with a Mohs hardness rating of 6.5 to 7. However, some agates may be more fragile due to cracks, fractures, or inclusions.
Agates can be susceptible to chipping or breaking if dropped or subjected to a strong impact. It is important to handle agates with care and store them in a safe place where they will not be knocked around or exposed to extreme temperature changes.
