Dendritic Agate is a variety of gemstone on the chalcedony side of the greater quartz family, a type of microcrystalline quartz, where the crystal makeup is not visible to the human eye - though they can contain quartz and druzy, as well. They are generally described as translucent with significant banding in the form of stripes and splotchy, mosslike formations. Common and popular, the great variety in forms and color variance ensure that no one two pieces will ever look exactly alike. Usage of agate as an ornamental stone goes back at least 2400 years, and quite possibly longer ago then that.
Dendritic Agate is a descriptive name of an unusual chalcedony agate characterized by inclusions that form splotchy brown/black fern or tree-like patterns called dendrites via resident iron and manganese impurities. It is frequently a pale white, gray or yellow color, but can rarely by found in a soft lilac or lavender purple

Dendritic agate is a relatively durable gemstone with a hardness of 6.5-7 on the Mohs scale, which means it is moderately hard and can withstand normal wear and tear.
